| Employing workers from outside the EEA |
 |
To employ workers from outside the EEA, you will need a licence as part of new immigration rules. The new tier system has 5 tiers but tier 2 is likely to have the most impact. This applies to skilled non EEA workers who come to the UK to fill a gap in skills.
Tier 2 applicants will need a certificate of sponsorship from an employer who is licensed to employ non EEA workers by the UK Border agency. Employers can apply online to the Borders Agency and must send certified copies of required documents to the UK Border Agency within 10 days of the application. There are eligibility requirements to be met including record keeping & compliance.
Most workers will need to show they can speak English to a certified level and must also have savings of at least £800 when they apply. This can be an advance from the prospective employer.

| Maternity Changes October 2008 |
 |
Proposals are in place to enhance benefits during Additional Maternity Leave for women due to give birth from 1st October 2008. They remain entitled to their full contractual rights, except for pay/cash, during their Ordinary Maternity Leave period which is the first 26 weeks.
The changes mean that this will now continue for the Additional Maternity Leave period where all non pay/cash benefits will continue for the full year of maternity leave.
Examples of benefits are company cars, mobile phones, gym membership and any holiday entitlement over statutory minimum amounts.
